BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Sabres remain winless on the road through the first month of the season but got just enough pucks to the net in Boston to tally another point in the standings.
Buffalo had a 40 to 22 advantage in shots on goal Thursday night but lost 4-3. A third consecutive overtime loss puts the Sabres record at 4-4-3 after 11 games with an 0-2-2 record away from home. This is the first time in 25 years the Sabres have lost their first four on the road.
Alex Tuch had a goal and an assist in the third period to rally Buffalo from a 3-1 deficit, and Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin assisted on Tuch’s goal after scoring his first of the year on a power play in the second period. Goaltender Alex Lyon’s .826 save percentage was his lowest in nine starts this season.
Marat Khusnutdinov scored the winning goal for the Bruins at 2:07 into overtime. Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak scored two minutes apart in the first period and Mark Kastelic poked in the third goal in the last minute of the second period.
The Sabres did not have a shot on goal in overtime and Dahlin gave the puck away before Khusnutdinov’s goal.
Buffalo’s shooting advantage was partly due to blocking 19 of Boston’s attempts. Bowen Byram led the defensive effort with four blocked shots, while Mattias Samuelsson and Dahlin each had three. The Sabres also had 25 hits, doubling the Bruins’ total. Checking line winger Beck Malenstyn tallied a game-high six hits.
Buffalo forward Jordan Greenway made his season debut following surgeries to repair a mid-body injury from last March. Greenway had three shots on goal and three hits with a minus-1 rating in 15:22 of ice time, centering the second line between Jason Zucker and Jack Quinn.
