Marc-Andre Fleury to Play One Final Game for Pittsburgh Penguins

September 12, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

A future Hall of Famer is going to get one last game before skating off into the sunset. News emerged on Friday that Marc-Andre Fleury has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Fleury will play parts of a pre-season game on September 27 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, it seems to just be for that one game before calling it a career.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are signing goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to a professional tryout contract and he’ll play in the Sept. 27th preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. And then, presumably, retire as a Pittsburgh Penguin, as the universe intended.

Marc-Andre Fleury Signs PTO to End Career with Pittsburgh Penguins

Fleury started his illustrious career with the Penguins and won three Stanley Cups with the club. The 40-year-old has played in the league 22 seasons and had stints with the Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild. He spent parts of the last four seasons with the Wild.

The Sorel, Quebec native appeared in 1,051 regular-season games with a 575-339-97 mark and 76 shutouts. His career goals-against-average was 2.60 and also carded a .912 save percentage. He has accumulated 15 20-win seasons, nine 30-win seasons and two 40-win seasons. Martin Brodeur is the only goalie to have more games and wins than Fleury in NHL history.

Fleury won the Vezina Trophy and the William Jennings Trophy in 2021 and was a four-time NHL All-Star. He was also first overall pick in the 2003 NHL Draft, which is only one of three players to have that honour.

What It Means

It seems appropriate that Fleury would get one last run with the Penguins. Fleury had a storybook end to his regular season career. However, he’ll get to don the black and gold one last time before hanging up his skates.

Fleury is a Penguins legend and will likely have his number 29 retired by the club some time in the future. He will likely be enshrined in the Hall of Fame in the near future.

His last appearance may only be a pre-season game. However, it seems to be the perfect note to end his career on.
