Martin Pospisil Signs New Deal with Calgary Flames

With several RFAs still on the board, particularly Connor Zary, this deal came as a bit of a surprise. However, it indicates that the Flames are committed to Pospisil as part of their long-term plans. The 25-year-old Slovak forward will see a steep pay increase. His cap hit jumps from a $775,000 cap hit to more than triple that figure starting in the 2026–27 season.

Popisil is coming off his first full NHL season. He logged almost 1,000 minutes in 81 games, recording 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists). While he doesn’t stand out on the scoresheet, he has earned praise for his physicality and willingness to put his body on the line with blocked shots and hits.

What It Means

He’s carved out a role as a reliable bottom-six winger. This pay raise appears to be a reflection of the Flames’ belief in his upside. Pospisil brings edge and energy to a roster in transition. He brings a set of intangible qualities that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. However, he can make a meaningful difference over an 82-game season. At times, he’s capable of showing glimpses of offensive potential, which could be unlocked further with continued development and more consistent linemates.

Still, the extension adds another layer of intrigue to Calgary’s retooling phase. With several pending RFAs and a need to manage cap flexibility moving forward, this contract signals that the Flames are willing to bet early on some of their younger pieces.
