Buffalo Sabres Extend Former Top 10 Pick

June 28, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

Jack Quinn has signed to a two-year contract extension with the Buffalo Sabres. The contract comes in at an average annual value of $3.375 million. The eighth pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft has been with the Sabres organization since draft day, and shows flashes of tremendous offensive talent. The 2025-2026 season will be the fourth season for Quinn in the NHL. With the contract, the likelihood Quinn gets traded drops ahead of the NHL draft.

Quinn’s Career So Far

The unfortunate reality for both Quinn and the Sabres, is that Quinn can’t stay healthy. Quinn only played 45 games in his first full season playing professionally in the American Hockey League. The upside is that he scored 61 points in those games. Quinn had a fine rookie campaign in the NHL, playing between Dylan Cozens and JJ Peterka mostly. He scored 14 goals and had 37 points his rookie season, while showing promise of great individual talent and scoring. Unfortunately, his sophomore slump was due to big injuries.

In the offseason Quinn sustained an Achilles tendon injury that caused him to miss the opening 32 games of the 2023-2024 season. And shortly after returning required surgery for another lower body injury that kept him out most of February and March. Quinn played in just 27 games that season, scoring nine goals and having 19 points.

The 2024-2025 season was unsuccessful for Quinn despite having 15 goals and 39 points. Quinn scored a bulk of those goals near the end of the season in games when the Sabres were on the brink or already eliminated from the playoffs. He was healthy the full season, but often found himself to be a healthy scratch by head coach Lindy Ruff.

What Quinn’s Contract Means for the Sabres

The Sabres are taking a chance on Quinn, and honestly overpaying for him. Years ago Quinn was the most promising prospect for the Sabres, and this contract will likely make or break his career in the NHL. Quinn needs to stay healthy and develop more of a two way game for the Sabres to be consider extending him next offseason.

The upside is Quinn can score, he has a genuine talent on the offensive side of the game. If Quinn can tap into that more consistently than he has in years past, this will be a great contract for the Sabres. The overpay by the Sabres suggest that they will keep him rather than using him as a trade asset this offseason.

The downside is you’re giving a young player a $3.3 million dollar contract and he looked brutal defensively this past year. Quinn struggled, and this contract does not necessarily reflect that. Does he slot into the top six in the lineup? That will be for Ruff and company to decide.

The once kid line of Peterka, Cozens and Quinn is almost dead. Cozens was traded away. Peterka was just recently traded away. Both of those guys were given contracts north of $7 million per year. Quinn finds himself with less than half that. Hopefully for the Sabres he has a chip on his shoulder and proves the doubters wrong. But if he has a season like last year, Kevyn Adams will have swung and missed once again.
