Belt’s Beer Garden: Loosen Your Belt

November 29, 2024 by Hustle Belt

Orion Helles Lager from Yellowhammer Brewing

Yellowhammer Brewing is nestled in Huntsville, Alabama’s west side, just a few miles outside of the downtown area. They have been around for nearly 15 years, opening back in 2010. In 2015 they expanded to their current location which has even doubled in size since opening, as they have added a Beirhall and distillery to it.

Their beers take Belgian and German brewing traditions and blend them with some Southern interpretations and charm. So when I saw a four pack of their Orion Helles Lager, I jumped at the chance.

Orion was brewed for the local amphitheater, The Orion, which is about four miles away from the brewery. It has a 4.5% ABV and was brewed with Noble hops. A four-pack was $11 at the brewery.

This Helles Lager poured a bright golden straw color with a murky view through it. There was just over a finger of eggshell white head that topped the beer. The foam quickly fizzled down to a thin ring around the glass with very minimal lacing, just a few lines here or there.

On the nose, the beer was light with big notes of flaked wheat. It was like liquid Corn Flakes with just a touch of hops. Those hops added a bit of pithy grapefruit and a nice dose of zesty lemon to the aroma.

Each sip began with a soft hum of carbonation underneath. The beer itself had a bit of a creamier, smoother mouthfeel that helped tone down that zippy carbonation. The flavors mirrored those from the aroma, with the grist offering up a solid helping of corn and wheat.

Midway through there was a nice pop of citrus and hops. The German Noble hops added a touch of bitterness and a hefty helping of lemons. While the grapefruit was more prevalent in the smell, the lemons were much more up front in the taste, with the grapefruit rind not even being noticeable in most swigs.

This was a very soft, sweet brew that went down quite easily. Maybe a little too easily. But that softness did make it more of a sipper and less of a chugging beer, as it sat a bit heavier than some lagers.

Overall, it was a damn fine Helles. It won’t blow you away but you will not be disappointed. Perfect for concerts at the Orion Amphitheater or just sitting back watching the night sky.
