The Spun’s 2019 College Football Staff Picks: Week 12

June 22, 2020 by The Spun Leave a Comment

We’re on the other side of the huge Week 11 in college football, in which LSU took down Alabama for the first time since 2011, and Minnesota stayed undefeated and handed Penn State its first loss. The College Football Playoff picture is starting to really take shape, with LSU entrenched as the new No. 1 this week.

Ohio State, Clemson, and Georgia round out the top four. UGA is the only real controversial inclusion, given their bad loss to a South Carolina team likely heading to a 4-8 finish.

The selection committee explained that the Dawgs’ wins over Notre Dame and Florida put them over Alabama and others for the final spot. Of course, they are probably in a win-and-in situation with regards to the SEC Championship Game, which will likely come against LSU.

The real intrigue comes if Georgia wins the SEC but enters the title game with more than one loss. We could really set up that possibility on Saturday, with the team’s trip to Auburn for this year’s edition of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

This weekend also features a ranked rivalry showdown between Navy and Notre Dame, a potential Big 12 title game preview between Oklahoma and undefeated Baylor, and undefeated Minnesota hits the road to face a tough Iowa team.

After 11 weeks, we’ve had some major shake-ups in the college football staff pick standings:

1. Andrew McCarty: 304-94
2. Dan Lyons: 303-95
T-3. Andrew Holleran: 299-99
T-3. Matt Hladik: 299-99
T-3. Stephen Driscoll: 299-99
6. Tzvi Machlin: 298-100
7. Alek Arend: 297-101
T-8. Matt Lombardi: 293-105
T-8. Chris Rosvoglou: 293-105

The biggest splits for our staff this week come in the Auburn-Georgia, Iowa-Minnesota, Iowa State-Texas, and Stanford-Washington State games.

After back-to-back nights with two MAC games, the Power Five slate starts tonight with North Carolina visiting Pitt. That is a sneakily big game that could go a long way towards deciding the ACC Coastal title.

Here are our college football picks for Week 12:
