Taleea Buxton notches 1st-place finish at Nittany Lion Challenge

Syracuse track and field began its season by competing in the Nittany Lion Challenge and Cornell Upstate Challenge on Saturday.

At the Nittany Lion Challenge, the Orange were highlighted by sophomore Taleea Buxton winning the women’s 60-meter hurdles just ahead of teammate Peyton Rollins. Meanwhile, freshman Madison Ceasar and sophomore Marissa Saunders finished the event placing sixth and eighth, respectively.

On the men’s side, junior Emanuel Joseph and senior David Peters qualified for the final men’s 60-meter hurdles race. Joseph placed second with a 7.95 time, while Peters’ 8.11 earned him fourth.

In the men’s 60-meter dash, SU was highlighted by senior Trei Thorogood, who finished second with a 6.70 time. The women were led by senior Olivia Garner, who finished 10th with a 7.67 time.

Syracuse was led by senior James Nmah, finishing eighth in the men’s 200-meter dash with a 22.25, while Garner led the women with an 11th-place finish, notching a 25.48 time.

In the 400-meter dash, junior Elijah Mallard’s 48.72 time earned a fourth-place men’s finish. Senior Xayvion Perkins finished 13th with a 50.80 time. In the women’s race, SU was led by Shayla Ford (58.82), coming in seventh, and Ceasar (1:00.25), finishing 12th.

At the Cornell Upstate Challenge, the Orange were highlighted by junior Lizzie Bigelow (5:27.05) placing fourth in the women’s mile and senior Mia Hernandez finishing fourth (1:23.92) in the women’s 500-meter race.

To round out the women’s mile, freshman Maya Dubrovsky finished seventh, junior Lucy Zombek placed 14th, junior Madeline Lutz crossed 15th and sophomore Kayla Harding rounded the Orange out in 17th place.

In the women’s 1,000-meter race, freshmen Blake Parker and Emily Rutkowski placed 10th and 11th, respectively.

On the men’s side, no SU athletes advanced to the 60-meter finals. Freshman Omar Alsaidi led the team with a time of 8.32 to finish in 34th place. In the 500-meter race, senior Alexander Segarra finished fifth with a 1:12.47 time.
