A good weekend on the water

The Syracuse Orange spring athletics season is in full swing so we are back with these weekly recaps as we look to keep you updated on the Olympic sports.

Softball (22-19, 3-15)

The Orange were off last week so they’ll look to build a winning streak with two games at Albany on Wednesday followed by a weekend series with Boston College.

Madelyn Lopez leads Syracuse with a .422 batting average which is 11th in the ACC. Madison Knight is tied for the ACC lead with 13 complete games so far this season.

M. Rowing

Syracuse defeated #15 Cornell and #20 Navy to retain the Goes Trophy for the fifth straight year. The Orange dominated the day- winning all four races by at least six seconds.

Next weekend will be the Orange against Dartmouth for the Packard Cup.

W. Rowing

The #10 Orange sent two 3rd Varsity squads to compete at the New York State Collegiate Championships. The 3V4 boat won their event and the 3V8 crew took 2nd behind Colgate.

Next weekend they head to Princeton to face the #4 Tigers, #6 Tennessee and #14 Ohio State. The No. 10 Orange return to the water on April 26 to race No. 4 Princeton, No. 6 Tennessee and No. 14 Ohio State at Princeton.

Tennis (9-10, 2-10)

Syracuse won their first two matches at the ACC Championships-knocking off Boston College and Clemson. Unfortunately the Orange couldn’t keep things going in the third falling 4-0 against Georgia Tech.

This was the furthest Syracuse has advanced in the ACC Championships, so hopefully the Orange can build on this next year.

Track and Field

A busy weekend on the track was highlighted by the strong performances from the sprint/hurdle group at Albany. Emmanuel Joseph’s 13.85 won the 110m hurdles as Naseem Smith, Isaiah Lewis and Isaiah Hayes followed in 2nd through 4th respectively. Malachi James was 2nd in the 100m dash in 10.29, which is 4th fastest in the ACC this season. The men’s 4x100m relay team of James, Malachi Coleman, Darrell Gill and James Nmah had a season-best time of 40.49 to take 2nd place.

For the women at Albany, Olivia Joly won the women’s 1500m run while Taleea Buxton (100m hurdles) and Madison Caesar (400m hurdles) were 2nd in their events. The women’s 4x100m relay of of Olivia Garner, Iaunia Pointer, Peyton Rollins and Kahniya James also had a 2nd-place finish.

Down at Virginia, Baneet Bains won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:25. 10th fastest in the ACC this season while Omar Alsaidi won the men’s 5k.

The Orange are off this weekend.
