Postseason play is right around the corner
While we can’t wait for Syracuse Orange football’s spring game this Saturday, many other SU athletes have been competing in their respective Olympic sports. Let’s check in on how all our Orange teams did in the past week.
Syracuse Softball (20-18, 4-11)
The Orange took two of three on the road against Seton Hall last weekend. Down by four in the top of the seventh of game one, Syracuse had six consecutive hitters reach base, including a two-run homer by Taylor Posner and a two-run double by Layla Morales-Alves. Vanessa Flores put the exclamation point on the inning with a two-run single to put SU in front 10-8. The Orange finished with eight runs in the seventh, winning game one 12-9.

Posner remained hot early in game two, putting Syracuse ahead in the first with an RBI groundout. Madison Knight, Peyton Schemmer and Angel Jasso all batted in runs, and Lindsey Hendrix retired the only two batters she faced in the circle to seal a 5-3 win.

Despite six innings of one-run ball from Jessie DiPasquale and Madison Knight, the Orange offense disappeared in game three, losing 1-0 to the Pirates.
Yesterday’s doubleheader against Canisius was canceled due to wet conditions. SU softball now heads to the Steel City this weekend for a three-game set against Pittsburgh. The first pitch of game one is on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
Syracuse Tennis (10-10, 4-9)
SU had the week off following a sweep on Senior Day over Louisville at Drumlins Country Club. The Orange finished #10 in the ACC standings for the regular season and will face #7 Notre Dame in the first round of the conference tournament tonight at 6:00 p.m. from Cary, North Carolina.

The two squads met less than two weeks ago at Drumlins, where the Fighting Irish won six of the nine matches. SU’s wins came from Miyuka Kimoto and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya in the #1 Doubles, Anastasia Sysoeva in the #4 Singles and Shiori Ito in the #5 Singles.
The winner will play #2 Virginia in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Syracuse Track and Field
The Orange collected multiple awards this past weekend at both the Friar Invite in Providence, Rhode Island, and the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida.
Benne Anderson finished first in the men’s mile with a time of 3:58.81, beating over 70 runners in the contest. Later, Isaiah Lewis and Emanuel Joseph came in first and second in the men’s 110 hurdles event. On the women’s side, Shayla Ford placed third in the 200m women’s race that featured 20 runners.
In Florida, Elijah Mallard finished third in the men’s 400m hurdles. Xayvion Perkins clocked in at 10th out of the 24 participants. On Friday afternoon, Shaleah Colaire led the women’s team with a fifth-place result in the 400m hurdles.

The Orange have another busy weekend ahead of them, with Friday events at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and the Albany Spring Classic in New York’s capital.
Syracuse Rowing
Over on the water, Syracuse men’s rowing had the weekend off after a 2-1 finish at the Pac-12 Invitational in California on April 6-7. The Orange next grab their paddles to compete for the Goes Trophy against Cornell and Navy on Saturday at home.

The #8-ranked women’s team traveled to Virginia last weekend to compete against #4 Cal, #17 Oregon State, and #1 Stanford. SU’s third varsity 8 won the first race of the competition, defeating OSU by nearly 30 seconds. From there, the Orange placed second three times and third once in races featuring the Golden Bears and the Beavers.
Day two was a bit less optimal, as the Cardinal swept the Orange in all five races on Sunday. The second varsity 4 was the closest in snagging a victory over the top rowing team in the country but still finished nine seconds behind Stanford.
The Orange have this weekend off before they travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Lake Wheeler Invite on April 26-27.
