Syracuse men finish 9th, women place 12th at Battle in Beantown

Syracuse men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their seasons at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday. The meet was hosted by Boston College. SU’s men placed ninth in the competition, while the women finished 12th.

In the men’s 8k, Syracuse came in ninth place out of 14 teams. It was the school’s lowest rank of the season. The Orange racked up 249 points, over 200 points behind first-place Harvard, which finished with 47. Northeastern with 98 points and Cornell with 116 points rounded out the top three schools.

Senior Silas Derfel was SU’s top finisher and placed 27th overall with a time of 24:41.4. Fellow senior Nathan Lawler came in at 34th overall, recording a time of 24:51.6. Freshman Julian Franjieh (25:15.1, 53rd), sophomore Gabriel Planty (25:42.4, 75th) and junior Noah Beveridge (25:53.6, 87th) were the only other Syracuse runners to finish in the top 100. Harvard junior Graham Blanks finished first with a time of 23:26.

In the women’s 5k, Syracuse had its lowest finish of the season, placing 12th out of 16 finishers. No SU runner finished in the top 50. The Orange tallied 347 points. Harvard continued its dominant showing, taking home the top spot with 61 points and beating out fellow Ivy League competitor Penn (103 points) by over 40 points. Texas A&M (107 points) finished third.

Caroline Kirby was the top finisher for the Orange, finishing 52nd overall. The sophomore recorded a time of 18:13.6. Junior Bethany Steiner placed 76th in the 5k with a time of 18:31.4. Steiner was followed by freshman Leah Futey (18:41.1, 86th), junior Tess Fitzmaurice (18:43.9, 89th) and sophomore Emily Toth-Ratazzi (18:53.4, 96th overall). No one else for Syracuse placed inside the top 100. Harvard junior Maia Ramsden was first to cross the finish line with a time of 17::00.1.
