2020 was certainly a season to throw away for Virginia Tech. COVID and a flurry of other injuries hid away the true potential the Hokies had. In 2021 they’ve already started to show off that potential. With a couple impressive wins, they sat up in the top 25 until losing to West Virginia this past weekend. With plenty of talent on either side of the ball and a determined head coach, VT could be a problem in the ACC this season.
Who to look out for on gameday:
Quarterback – Braxton Burmeister #3
As a transfer from Oregon back in 2019, Burmeister has had time to become comfortable within this program. He’s fought through numerous injuries and plenty of adversity, but he’s here now and he’s ready to lead this football team. This offense did receive a tough blow, as star tight end James Mitchell was recently announced as out for the season due to a knee injury, but don’t expect that to stop Burmeister. He can really do it all, expect him to find a way to make this offense work without one of his favorite targets.
Defensive Back – Jermaine Waller #2
Through three games this season, Waller has already nabbed three interceptions, not to mention he’s also 4th on the team in total tackles. The Washington D.C. native is putting on a show in Blacksburg and the league should be on notice, this kid is no joke. Expect him to be a problem when the Orange travel down to Lane Stadium later this year.
Defensive Line – TyJuan Garbutt #45
At 6-1, it seems like Garbutt might be undersized for his position on the defensive line. The Virginia native disagrees and shows that via the box score each weekend. Through 3 games this season, Garbutt’s already tallied 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. He’s a force in this VT front 7, a guy that SU fans will probably get to know by the end of the contest between Syracuse and Virginia Tech.
