SU women’s lacrosse jumps 4 spots to No. 6 in IL Poll

Syracuse women’s lacrosse moved from No. 10 to No. 6 in the Week 5 Inside Lacrosse Poll released Monday. The jump comes after the Orange’s double overtime win over then-No. 6 Stanford on Friday.

The Orange entered their game with the Cardinal on a three-game skid, which saw them plummet in the rankings. Against Stanford, Syracuse jumped out to a 5-1 first-quarter lead, but surrendered a 6-0 second-quarter run leading to an 8-7 halftime deficit. From there, both teams fought down the stretch and headed to overtime. After a scoreless first period, freshman Mileena Cotter buried the game-winning goal to give SU the 14-13 win.

In its three games prior, Syracuse struggled to deal with the loss of star attack Olivia Adamson, scoring eight goals in each game. But its offense rebounded Friday, with nine different goal scorers.

Much of that success came from a stronger showing on the draw control. For the first time this season, Meghan Rode didn’t start in the circle. Instead it was Joely Caramelli, who led the Orange to a 16-14 advantage on the draw, allowing them to have more scoring chances.

SU ends its streak of five straight ranked contests Monday versus No. 7 Johns Hopkins, as it looks to build off its momentum from Friday.
