Orange athletes are still chasing titles in 2021
The Syracuse Orange women’s lacrosse team isn’t the only one still competing this spring. Next weekend the 9th-ranked Syracuse women’s rowing team will head to Sarasota, Fla. to race in the NCAA Championships.

Despite losing to the Kentucky Wildcats in the team competition, Syracuse tennis freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya earned an invitation to the NCAA individual championships. Kanapatskaya is one of 64 singles competitors heading to Orlando and she’ll be seeded between 9th and 16th. She’s the 7th Syracuse player to be selected for the NCAA Championships and was a first-team All-ACC selection this year.
The Syracuse men’s rowing team is preparing for next week’s IRA Regatta and the Orange Varsity 8 boat is 3rd in the latest rankings. Syracuse trails only Washington and Cal as they head into next week’s races in New Jersey which will be streamed online.

In track and field, the East Regionals coaches reviews for the women and men have been posted. As expected, Syracuse will have Amanda Vestri, Annie Heffernan, JP Trojan and Joe Dragon scratch the 5k to focus on the 10k. It looks as though Abigail Spiers might grab the final spot in the women’s 10k joining Jordan Jacob. For the men, I’m waiting final confirmation on Simon Smith in the 1500 along with Silas Derfel and Domenic Hockenbury in the 10k. It looks like the 10k guys will make the field but we should get official confirmation on Thursday with competition starting next Wednesday in Jacksonville.
We’ll keep you updated as these Syracuse athletes continue their quest for national titles.
