SU men’s XC finish 1st, women finish 2nd in Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational

Following a dominant showing in Colgate last week, Syracuse cross country had another strong showing. The men’s team claimed the top spot in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State on Friday, while the women’s team finished second.

The Orange dominated in the men’s 5.2 mile run, with four different Syracuse runners finishing in the top eight. SU had 31 points overall, well ahead of second place Georgetown with 70 points. Missouri ended the afternoon in third (147 points), with Columbia (163 points) and Penn State (165 points) rounding out the top five. The men’s team had an average time of 25:03 and a total time of 2:05.16.

Junior Sam Lawler took first place with a time of 24:55.5. Not too far behind in third place was fellow junior Assaf Harari, crossing in 24:56.0. Redshirt freshman Benne Anderson (25:00.4) and Alex Comerford (25:05.5) finished sixth and eighth respectively, with redshirt freshman Connor Ackley (25:18.8) placing 13th.

The women’s team captured second place in the 6k run, claiming 62 points on the day. Penn State easily came in first with a 42 point performance. Behind SU, Princeton came in third with 78 points. Connecticut (91 points) and Pittsburgh (164 points) took the final two spots among the top five finishers. The Orange recorded a team time of 1:43.42, which was good for an average time of 20:44.

Senior Savannah Roark was first to cross the finish line for Syracuse, ending with a time of 20:18.6. Roark placed third in the race. Senior Rylie Lusk finished in ninth with a time of 20:43.6, with junior Emma Eastman placing 12th with a 20:44.9 time.

With back-to-back strong performances, Syracuse will look to keep its momentum going next meet in Madison, Wisconsin. The Orange will compete in the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Sept. 27.
