Well that was fast.
Apparently the roster changes aren’t done just yet for the Syracuse Orange football program. Just weeks after he was added, it appears that Arizona State offensive line transfer Cody Shear is leaving SU, according to a report from Stephen Bailey (which has been confirmed by the athletic department).
Shear was brought in as potential help on the interior line for Syracuse. The Oregon native started his career with the Ducks, before transferring to the Sun Devils. He didn’t see any real action with either team, but was a key representative in #WeAreUnited, the Pac-12 player rights initiative.
With Patrick Davis opting to play in the CFL this year, and Dakota Davis being a bit banged up this offseason, adding Shear could’ve been a nice insurance policy as so many Orange players on the line remain pretty young. But unfortunately it wasn’t mean to be.
Shear becomes the second lineman to transfer out without playing a down this offseason, joining Willie Tyler, who came in from Texas.
Now I won’t claim to know what to make of this development. Obviously you never want to lose players, and we’ve lost quite a few this offseason given the adjusted transfer rules. But it’s notable that only a handful of the players to depart were significant contributors, so there’s a chance that players remaining on the roster passed them up on the depth chart (potentially leading to the departures).
