On Tuesday, the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association named Syracuse’s Megan Carney as the Offensive Player of the Week following her performance in a 12-11 win over No. 4 Stony Brook.
The senior recorded only two points against the Orange’s first opponent then-No. 13 Stanford. Against unranked Binghamton, Carney notched four goals en route to SU’s 23-6 victory. But in Syracuse’s first top five opponent of the season, Carney scored a team-high seven points, consisting of three goals and four assists against the Seawolves. Her four assists were one shy of her career-high, and she also led all SU attackers expected goals added (4.52), per Lacrosse Reference.
Carney started her day in the second quarter by assisting on goals scored by Meaghan Tyrrell and Emily Hawryschuk. Carney would hold the ball behind the net, which is her normal position while on the attack and send it to her fellow teammates. Both Meaghan and Hawryschuk received the pass and sent their shots past Seawolves’ goalkeeper Charlie Campbell.
Ten minutes after the assist on Meaghan’s goal, the Texas native scored her first of the day. Hawryschuk held the ball in the 8-meter, drawing two Stony Brook defenders. This left Carney open, with only Campbell in front of her. Carney made a move with her stick and then beat Campbell with a quick shot into the bottom right corner of the net. She would score her second goal against the Seawolves to open the second half to make the score 7-5.
Stony Brook responded with a 4-1 scoring run to take back the lead, but the Orange were able to draw a free position attempt and Carney took the shot. She set up at the top left of the 8-meter and dashed toward the net. Carney’s attempt bounced between Campbell’s legs and into the net for the attacker’s third and final goal of the game. This sparked another four-goal run to help the Orange finish with 12 goals, which would be enough to improve their record to 3-0.
