Preseason First Team All-American Meaghan Tyrrell earned USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Women’s Player of the Week after helping Syracuse go 2-0 to start the season as she scored 11 combined goals against Stanford and Binghamton.
Against Stanford, Syracuse was down 5-3 but then Meaghan went on a tear in the second period and scored three goals in a row to give Syracuse a 6-5 lead. Her first two goals were unassisted, and then on the third her sister, Emma Tyrrell, found her cutting across the net to notch a hat trick before halftime.
At the end of the third period, Meaghan extended Syracuse’s lead to two goals after she caught a pass from Maddy Baxter, and then she scored her sixth goal of the night with nine minutes remaining in the fourth period to give Syracuse a 9-6 lead. Meaghan scored half of the team’s goals in the 12-9 win over the No. 13 Cardinal.
On Sunday, the senior attack got her first point of the day after she assisted Savannah Sweitzer for her first goal of the season. Two goals later, she assisted Baxter and then quickly scored a goal of her own and Syracuse led 6-0 seven minutes into the game.
Meaghan scored her second goal unassisted with two minutes left in the first period. She isolated her defender one-on-one, faked left and dodged right, leaving her defender to fall to the left before she attacked the goal and scored for a highlight real play.
Meaghan and the Orange dominated the rest of the game, with Meaghan finishing with five goals and three assists to average 5.5 goals per game on the weekend.
