Major College Basketball Power Could Lose 5 Players To Transfer

June 22, 2020 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Jim Boeheim looks on from the sideline for Syracuse.

Syracuse basketball won its final game of the shortened season, blowing out North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The first major news for the team after the cancellation of the rest of the ACC Tournament hasn’t been nearly as positive.

Late in the season, legendary head coach Jim Boeheim hinted that the team could see a number of players transfer this offseason. That appears to be coming to pass. On Friday night, freshman guard Brycen Goodine confirmed that he plans to enter the transfer portal. He played in 23 games this year, averaging 1.9 points and 1 rebound per game.

Goodine definitely has potential, but he has elected to continue his career elsewhere. He’s not the only member of the Syracuse backcourt to do so. Jalen Carey, who began the year as the team’s starting point guard before losing his job to Joe Girard, and eventually taking an injury redshirt, will reportedly enter the transfer portal. Reserve guard Howard Washington, a junior, will as well.

The hits may not stop there for the Orange. Per The Athletic’s Matthew Gutierrez, long reserve forward Robert Braswell, who missed the balance of this season with a lingering injury, and top walk-on Brendan Paul are also looking to move. Braswell sounds like the most likely to stay. Even so, it is a tough development.

Syracuse will lose not only Goodine, but Jalen Carey, Howard Washington, walk-on Brendan Paul and possibly Robert Braswell, @TheAthleticCBB reported this morning. And it’s unlikely Syracuse lands Seth Towns or Patrick Tape as graduate transfers https://t.co/OkEm73QAes

As Gutierrez notes in his tweet of the piece, which is behind the site’s paywall, the Orange are expected to be active in the transfer market. Columbia big man Patrick Tape visited the school during the season, and they’re after Harvard star Seth Towns as well.

His report mentions that the staff doesn’t expect to land either veteran player.

The bright side is that the team was pretty young overall, but fourth-year junior Elijah Hughes, the ACC’s leading scorer and a first-team All-ACC player this year, is widely expected to head to the NBA Draft.

This will be a very interesting, pivotal offseason for Jim Boeheim and his program.
