Jim Boeheim Reacts To Buddy Punching Florida State Player

Jim Boeheim speaking to the media.

Following his team’s blowout win in the ACC Tournament today, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim downplayed his son Buddy’s apparent punch of a Florida State player.

During the first half of the Orange’s 96-57 beatdown of the Seminoles, Boeheim was caught hitting FSU’s Wyatt Wilkes in the chest at the end of a play. Wilkes went down in pain, but no foul was called and the play wasn’t reviewed.

After the game, Boeheim was asked about the incident and claimed it was an “inadvertent” strike that came after Wilkes had pushed his son twice.

“It wasn’t much of a punch,” Boeheim told reporters.

However, on ESPN’s studio coverage, analysts LaPhonso Ellis and Seth Greenberg disagreed with Boeheim’s assessment and said that the ACC should suspend Buddy after it reviews the tape.

“It was not inadvertent. It was intentional,” Ellis said. “It’s a flagrant 2 foul and he should be suspended.”

Syracuse, the No. 9 seed in the ACC Tournament, is slated to take on top-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals tomorrow at noon. We’ll see if the league decides to prevent Buddy Boeheim from playing in that game.
