
The first-time Boeheim’s Army coach is getting a title along with the gig.
Former Syracuse Orange men’s basketball coach and Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim will be back on the sidelines with a special title for his upcoming role for this year’s TBT.
In a special announcement that came Wednesday, Boeheim was named “Head Coach Emeritus” for Boeheim’s Army. Boeheim will be helping guide the team carrying his name as they hope to get back to the TBT championship for the first time since 2021. Boeheim clarified his role in an interview with Donna Ditota of syracuse.com
“I’m advising them,” Boeheim said in a phone conversation. “I’ll go to practice when they’re getting ready to play and I‘ll advise them on some things, but I’m definitely not coaching.”
After nearly five decades at the helm of the men’s basketball program, Boeheim’s tenure as coach ended following the 2022-23 season. He concluded his time as coach guiding the Orange to 33 NCAA Tournament appearances, five Final Four nods, three appearances in the championship game and the 2003 title.
Boeheim was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. He finished with an all-time coaching record of 1,116–441.
Currently, Boeheim serves as Syracuse University’s Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics. He’s also spent his post-coaching time calling games and serving as an analyst for ESPN and the ACC Network since December 2023.

Now, Boeheim will be dusting off some of the coaching cobwebs and reunite with some of his former players this summer. As of Tuesday night, this year’s Boeheim’s Army team that includes Buddy Boeheim, Elijah Hughes, Chris McCullough and Rakeem Christmas. As they fill out the rest of the roster, Jim Boeheim will continue to help with the player recruitment and game planning.
“I’ve helped them a little bit talking about players they should try to get,” Boeheim said. “And when they come into town, I’ll go to practice and give them some ideas of what I think they can do on offense, mainly. I’ll watch practice, stuff like that. I’ll just be a spectator at the games.”
Syracuse is one of the eight host sites for this year’s TBT. The Syracuse Regional portion of the winner-take-all tournament is happening from July 19 to July 23. It will be held at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena. Tickets are now on sale.
