Highlights from first day of Syracuse football’s fall camp

Finally, the Orange are back on the gridiron

I know at the very least some of you were excited that Syracuse Orange football is back. For better or worse, it’ll be interesting to see how SU tries to bounce back from a 1-10 season with a couple of super seniors, some interesting freshmen, some new coaches, and a new face that has everyone talking.

Let’s start with that new face under center, Garrett Shrader. The first thing I noticed about Shrader in person? He’s tall. At 6-foot-4, Shrader has the height to see over the defense, and the video below shows his first throws that we’ve seen from him in an Orange (or in this case black) uniform.

I stayed on the offensive side of the field for most of the open practice section, which gave me a chance to see new offensive line coach Mike Schimdt in action. Here he is running a simple drill with the offensive line.

A lot of questions rest in the wide receiver group behind Taj Harris and Anthony Queeley. Here’s a couple of them running through a quick drill.

But let’s end where we started – the quarterbacks. I got a quick throw from Tommy DeVito before Justin Lamson took some reps as well. Lamson’s been on campus for spring ball earlier this year, but like Shrader, this is the first time we’ve seen him throw in a Syracuse uniform.

As usual, there’s not much we can take away from only 10 minutes of practice, but at least it’s nice to see the football season return to some form of normality. I’ll bring you some of the more interesting videos I take every Friday here.

In the meantime, if you want to see the Orange in person before the games count, SU Athletics announced that the Dome (or Stadium, whatever we’re calling it now) will be open for fans on Friday, August 27, which is three weeks from now. Fans can see the Dome upgrades for the first time before an open practice at 6:30 p.m.
