Name: Chase Simmons

Position: Defensive Line

Year: Freshman

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 255 lbs

Hometown: Little River, S.C.

High School: North Myrtle Beach

2020 stats: Named the 2020 All-South Carolina Defensive End by the South Carolina Coaches Association and helped North Myrtle Beach to a state title game appearance. Recorded 48 tackles, 13 for loss and nine sacks his senior year.

2021 projections: Given the log-jam on the defensive line, Simmons is probably redshirting this year. However, the accolades speak for themselves. He may need to put on a bit more weight but Simmons could be a factor on the two-deep sooner rather than later.

How’d he get here?: Simmons initially committed to Coastal Carolina. However, on National Signing Day, he flipped his commitment and signed with the Orange instead. Syracuse didn’t give Simmons a scholarship offer until January 24 of this year.

What’d recruiting sites say?: Three stars from 247sports and ESPN, two from Rivals.

Money quote: Simmons reportedly started to have second thoughts about going to Coastal Carolina after the team apparently wanted to use him as a tight end.

“That was something that was kind of shady to me,” Simmons said. “When they offered me, it didn’t feel like I got offered.”

Tweets of wonder: Tell me if I’m wrong, but I doubt most people can box jump into the bed of a pickup truck.

What movie would Dino recommend for him?: There’s probably a good amount of golf courses in South Carolina. “Caddyshack” still holds up as one of the funnier sports movies, especially when you have Chevy Chase playing golfer Ty Webb in it.

Interesting nugget o’interest: Simmons initially thought Central New York was just as fast-paced, hectic, chaotic and crowded just like New York City. Native CNYer’s will know that’s not true, and Dino had to set the record straight.

“(Babers) was saying how they have bucks in the backyard,” Simmons said. “He was in the hot tub one night just chilling and a buck walked past him and I started laughing when he said that. He also said there’s some turkeys out there. He was just letting me know when people hear New York, most of it is like the country, and a lot of people down south don’t know that.”
