Willie Taggart is officially out of work, and Florida State is now in the process of finding its new head coach. Speculation has been brewing regarding the Seminoles’ coaching search.
College football analyst Danny Kanell is an FSU alum. On Monday, he outlined his top 10 candidates he feels the Seminoles should go after to fill their coaching void.
But first, he shut down several of the rumors linking several big coaching names to the FSU opening.
“I’ve seen some names that I think are ridiculous,” Kanell said on his ‘Kanell and Bell’ podcast. “Urban Meyer I think is ridiculous … James Franklin at Penn State. Yeah it’d be a lovely hire, but I don’t think it’s a realistic option.”
So who should Florida State go after? The Seminoles took a risk in hiring Willie Taggart. Kanell thinks the school needs to go after a proven coach capable of turning around a program quickly – in this case, Baylor’s Matt Rhule.
“Matt Rhule at Baylor inherited one of the worst situations you can have in college football … they were 1-11 in his first year,” Kanell said. “Comes in, turns it around where they’re undefeated this year.”
Rhule absolutely makes sense in regards to helping Florida State improve its team culture. Baylor’s turnaround in such a short span has been astounding.
The Baylor head coach isn’t the only one to make Kanell’s list. Check out his top 10 coaching targets for FSU in the tweet below.

Plenty of interesting names included. Florida State is in a recruiting hotbed. Hiring a coach who has ties to the region in regards to recruiting could prove beneficial.
