Three Syracuse players were named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list Thursday. The award is given to the best men’s and women’s lacrosse players in the country each year. Junior attack Joey Spallina, senior attack Owen Hiltz and long pole defender Billy Dwan all appear on the watch list, which includes 50 players from 28 schools.
Following a stellar sophomore season where he finished third in the country in points with 88, Spallina is one of the top names to potentially win the award. Spallina totaled five points (three goals, two assists) in SU’s 24-5 win over Jacksonville in its season opener. Through two seasons with the Orange, Spallina has registered 156 points and will most certainly add to that total this season.
Hiltz, who’s in his last season of eligibility, is arguably Syracuse’s most reliable goal scorer. He led the team with 38 last season and is part of one of the most dangerous attacks in the country this year. Hiltz scored and assisted twice last Saturday as he looks to finish out his collegiate career with his best season yet.
Dwan rounds out the group as the only non-Syracuse attack to make the watch list. The junior is an integral part of Syracuse’s defense, often shutting down dangerous attacks on opposing teams. He also presents a threat as a goalscorer, finishing with eight last season, often coming in transition.
The last Syracuse player to win the award was Mike Leveille in 2008. Spallina made the top 25 last season along with goalie Will Mark but was not one of the finalists. Notre Dame’s Pat Kavanagh ended up taking home the award.
