The cast of “The Rich Eisen Show” discuss this polarizing topic
Josh Allen is big time. Having entered the NFL in 2018, the 6’5” Buffalo Bills quarterback has seen his fair share of success. An NFL MVP award, lots of playoff appearances including several in the AFC East Championship game, and broken records in a plethora of categories in the league and for his franchise, Allen has become a household name in the sports world.
However, there’s one thing that the star quarterback is missing: a Super Bowl ring. While some point to his overall achievements in their case for stating that Allen is one of the greatest NFL players of all time, others argue that his lack of top-tier success pushes him below players who have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Recently on the “Rich Eisen Show” the popular and often witty sportscaster and radio show host of the same name posed and discussed the question: “If Josh Allen never played another snap in the NFL, would he be headed to Canton and a gold jacket?”
In a segment known as “Who Wants to be a Hall of Famer?” Eisen started off the show with some notable Josh Allen Achievements including:
- 2024 NFL MVP
- Three-time Pro Bowler
- Two-time Second-Team All-Pro
- 26,434 passing yards (75th)
- 195 passing TDs (59th)
- 4,142 rushing yards (7th)
- 65 rushing TDs (2nd)
- Five consecutive AFC East titles
- First player ever with five-straight seasons with 40-plus total TDs
Cast member and self-proclaimed Dallas Cowboys fan TJ Jefferson was the first to offer his opinion on the matter. “This is tough because the stats are incredible for where he’s at in his career” Jefferson started. “But you gotta look at some of the great quarterbacks who aren’t in the Hall of Fame and you kind of put his career up against theirs.”
He then said that right now, a lot of people would probably disagree that Allen would belong in the Hall of Fame. “But, you see, I feel a little different about Josh Allen,” Jefferson proclaimed. “I might be biased and this is the reason why.”
A clip then began to play of Josh Allen appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show” and asking for TJ. Allen spoke nostalgically, “I think the night before the draft, I think I gave him (TJ) his first interview on your show.” The two then reminisce about the whole interview experience and how Allen was “in” as soon as TJ mentioned that he was from the show.
“Because Josh Allen is my man and because of that moment, Josh Allen YES! I’m putting him in the Hall of Fame!” exclaimed Jefferson.
Chris Brockman, fellow cast member and long-time New England Patriots fan, had to interject. Chuckling, he immediately responded by stating, “That’s absurd. I mean Josh Allen is a fine player. I really enjoy watching him despite the fact that he plays for the Buffalo Bills but he’s only been in the league seven years.” Continuing his argument, Brockman explained, “The graphic, there was a typo. He only has 26,000 career yards. He has 8,000 yards less and 50 touchdowns less than someone you love, TJ — Tony Romo.”
“I get the MVP last year.” Brockman added. “But make a Super Bowl, win a championship, let’s play a little bit longer, let’s double your career then you’re gonna get there. He’s on a nice path but as of right now. if he never played again, Josh Allen is NOT getting a gold jacket.”
Next up came Rich Eisen with his own feelings on the subject. “Yeah, 29-years old, 26,434 passing yards — that’s 75th all-time,” he began. “He does have the franchise record for the Buffalo Bills for single-season passing yards and TDs. I just think one day, I’m going to see him in the Hall of Fame. I think one day he will have a bust in the Hall of Fame. I just think he needs more days as an NFL player for that to happen just knowing how the voting process takes place.”
Eisen added that whenever they do the “Who Wants to be a Hall of Famer” segment for an NFL player, he’s a bit more well-informed than other sports because of his knowledge of the voting process. “I just know that when Philip Rivers comes up for votes and Eli Manning isn’t in yet and it took a few rounds for Kurt Warner to get in, that these numbers are not going to get him in,” Eisen stated.
“Despite him being one of the best in the league, despite him being an MVP one time, he has not made it to the Super Bowl and these numbers just do not support him being in the Pro Football Hall of Fame despite him being clearly one of the best, clearly one of the best Buffalo Bills at the position of all-time, clearly being one of the most athletic players to ever play the position. All of that combined though, he does need to do this more,” Eisen claimed.
He also added, “Right now, he’s one of the foils to (Patrick) Mahomes and I need to get him to be the foil.”
Chris Brockman had to add that Josh Allen is a “much better quarterback” than Eli Manning ever was, albeit having Super Bowl successes. Though when Eisen stated that there’s no argument that Allen is close to being a Hall of Famer, Brockman replied, “Ehhh, he hasn’t even had 200 TDs yet.”
Jefferson then made a point that even with several Super Bowl rings coming against Tom Brady, people are still reluctant to vote Manning into the Hall of Fame. If stats alone don’t bump a player up to be candidate but Super Bowl Rings don’t either, then what does?
