There are plenty of contenders
During the 2020 season, the Buffalo Bills took a bit of a committee approach when it came to the run game. Will the team take a similar approach this season, or will one player emerge as the favorite to lead the team?
Many will peg Zack Moss and Devin Singletary as the favorites this year, as they served as the primary ball carriers during 2020. Neither really established themselves as a lead back, which could imply that Buffalo could employ a bit of a timeshare again this season. Both Singletary (4.4 YPC) and Moss (4.3) were relatively effective last year, but fans would certainly like to see some more consistency out of the duo. Singletary (687) finished with the most rushing yards for the team in 2020, playing in three more games than Moss (481).
Quarterback Josh Allen muddies the waters a bit, as an effective red zone threat as a rusher. Allen found the end zone on 8 of his 102 carries last season, rushing for a total of 421 yards. There is no reason to think that Allen will not continue to be a threat as a rusher, and should factor into the mix for the team lead this season.
Matt Breida, Antonio Williams, and Christian Wade can be considered wild cards in this competition—although all three are somewhat of fan favorites. One could argue that Breida has the most potential, after averaging over 5 YPC with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2018 and 2019 season.
