Tre’Davious White Reveals Why He Switched Positions In College

August 16, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Buffalo Bills v New England Patriots

Tre’Davious White has been one of the most impressive cornerbacks in the NFL for the last couple seasons with the Buffalo Bills. However, he wasn’t always expected to be one of the best at the position.

White, who played both corner and quarterback in high school in Louisiana, committed to LSU to play wide receiver for then Tigers receivers coach Adam Henry. Everything changed when he showed up to summer camp ahead of his freshman college season.

In an interview on NFL Network this past week, White shared that he arrived at LSU and quickly realized that he was going to face some tough competition at the wide receiver position. That was because the Tigers already had juniors Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry lining up on the outside.

“We had two guys by the name of Odell and Jarvis, so I knew I wasn’t going to play,” White said of playing wide receiver at LSU on NFL Network Wednesday, per Shea Dixon of 247Sports.

So, rather than sit for a year behind Beckham Jr. and Landry, White made the switch to corner and played in 13 games his freshman year. From there, he blossomed into an All-American at the position and was selected by the Bills in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He signed with #LSU to play WR for Adam Henry. Then he got to camp..

Moved to CB and the rest was history.

White has made the Bills 2017 first-round pick well worthwhile with his performance over the last four years. He made back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2019 and 2020 and was named a First-Team All-Pro in 2019. That year, he made six interceptions, forced two fumbles and racked up 58 tackles as a part of Buffalo’s second-ranked defense.

During the 2020 offseason, the Bills rewarded White for being one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He signed a four-year contract extension with $55 million guaranteed, which made him the highest-paid player at his position at the time. He backed up the new deal with another strong season that landed him Second-Team All-Pro honors.

Considering White could’ve ended up as a wide receiver, his start in the NFL as a cornerback is even more impressive. It also means he could still be improving, which should be very worrisome for the rest of the league.
