Tre'Davious White named 'best value' on Bills

July 7, 2020 by Bills Wire Leave a Comment

Bleacher Report recently named the “best value” on every roster in the NFL. In regard to the Bills, B/R took the easy way out.

But it’s a hard choice to argue.

The value pick for Buffalo in a landslide for anyone, including B/R, cornerback Tre’Davious White.

Here’s how B/R breaks down White’s selection:

Only two cornerbacks—the Buffalo Bills’ Tre’Davious White and New England Patriots’ Stephon Gilmore—belong in the discussion for the best at the position.

Gilmore is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year with the highest salary-cap hit ($18.7 million) of any cornerback in the league this season.

For comparison, White, who was also named a 2019 first-team All-Pro, will account for $3.2 million against the Bills’ salary cap. In total, 50 cornerbacks hold a higher salary-cap hit for the upcoming campaign.

To say that Buffalo is getting a great value is an understatement since White received the second-highest grade in red-zone coverage and didn’t allow a single touchdown last year, per Pro Football Focus.

What more is there to say? White received long overdue compensation from the NFL in 2019. An All-Pro nod and Pro Bowl status which could have come down as early as White’s rookie season.

That, combined with White still playing on his rookie contract, make his value to the Bills’ salary cap enormous. But that’s soon going to change for the team and general manager Brandon Beane.

The GM has often touted taking care of his own players and keeping continuity in the locker room. White is the face of Buffalo’s defense, and to keep him there, the Bills and going to have to pay. Buffalo already flexed the fifth-year option on White’s rookie deal so he’ll be with the Bills through 2021. But prior to next season, the Bills should look to extend White’s current contract, which will likely see him become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

The things currently look, that’ll be money well spent.
