Mike Shula, the son of Hall of Fame head coach Don Shula, spent the last two seasons on Sean McDermott’s coaching staff with the Buffalo Bills.
According to Bills reporter Sal Capaccio, Shula’s contract has expired and he won’t be retained by the organization. The 58-year-old coach had been a senior offensive assistant since 2022.
Shula arrived in Buffalo after two seasons as the quarterbacks coach of the Denver Broncos. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants in 2018-19.
From 2013-17, Shula was the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, helping the team reach the Super Bowl and quarterback Cam Newton win MVP during the 2015 season.
Shula was the quarterbacks coach in Carolina in 2011-12 after a four-year stint in that role with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2007-10.
Before that, the former Alabama quarterback was the head coach at his alma mater, going 26-23, though 16 of those victories were later vacated by the NCAA.
Shula’s best season in Tuscaloosa was 2005, when the Crimson Tide went 10-2 and beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. He went 6-6 in 2006 and was fired, paving the way for Nick Saban to take over and begin the greatest dynasty in modern college football.
Shula’s coaching career began with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive assistant in 1988.
