During Tuesday’s Buffalo Bills practice, a connection from Mitch Trubisky to Isaiah McKenzie went scary after McKenzie took a hit from safety Jordan Poyer. Multiple reports indicated that Poyer attempted to pull up on the collision. Despite that, McKenzie lay on the turf for several minutes.
Trainers ran over to McKenzie and eventually were able to assist him off the field. Afterward McKenzie was sent to be examined and determine the severity of the injury. At a press conference later in the day, general manager Brandon Beane offered little detail.
“We sent him off to get checked out, and there’s really nothing to offer right now, Hopefully Isaiah is okay.”
It was reported later in the evening by Ian Rapaport that McKenzie had been sent for an MRI.
Isaiah McKenzie had established himself as a viable gadget and situational player on offense. With the loss of Andre Roberts it was widely expected that McKenzie would fill the role of returner on special teams this season. McKenzie’s primary competition, rookie wide receiver Marquez Stevenson sustained an injury against the Bears in preseason action. An x-ray on his foot/ankle luckily came back negative.
