Sean McDermott: 'Hard to win' with Bills' turnover issues

November 8, 2022 by Bills Wire

Buffalo’s head coach was to the point in what obstacles prevented the Bills from winning their matchup against the Jets in New Jersey on Sunday.

“We didn’t play well enough to win,” Sean McDermott said.

The coach was also very direct in his assessment of the team’s play, particularly when it came to lost possessions.

“It’s hard to win the game when you turn the ball over,” he added. “We had opportunities and we shot ourselves in the foot.”

During the contest, the Bills experienced some offensive woes for the second week in a row.

QB Josh Allen scored Buffalo’s only two touchdowns, but he did so on the ground without tossing any in a season-low 205-yard passing game. He would lead the team in rushing going 86 yards on nine carries that included a career-long 36-yard designed run for a score in the first half.

He also fumbled twice and threw two interceptions, however, which led to the Jets scoring points. This after he threw two picks last week in the Bills win over the Packers.

It marks the third straight game in which the Bills have committed a red zone turnover.

“I’ll look at the tape, but I felt like we got a little bit too one-dimensional, at times, and they’ve got a good defense and a good defensive front,” head coach Sean McDermott said after the game.

The Jets’ defense added five total sacks of Allen to the day, finishing with a 20-17 win.

Nonetheless, the coach remains confident in his quarterback.

“I have ultimate trust in Josh,” McDermott said. “He’s a heck of a football player, it’s important to him, so he knows that those are non-negotiables, those plays right there. It’s gonna happen from time to time just by percentages and times you throw, (but) overall it’s gotta improve.”

Allen sees the opportunity to improve as well.

“Made some bad decisions tonight, really cost our team,” Allen said to the press. “A lot to learn from, a lot to grow from.”
