Reunion? Cowboys Among Best Fits For Top Free Agent

May 2, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Amari Cooper Free Agent

Longtime veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper is arguably the best veteran remaining on the free agent market. A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Alabama product had a relatively down 2025 with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Appearing in a combined 14 games, the wideout finished the season with an unremarkable 44 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns on 85 targets. While these numbers aren’t spectacular, he played through injury and is only one season removed from recording 1,250 yards with terrible quarterbacking.

Nobody knows if Amari Cooper has anything left in the tank, but the free agent could maximize his career with the Dallas Cowboys. After failing to address the wide receiver position early in the NFL Draft, America’s Team doesn’t have a viable option to start opposite superstar CeeDee Lamb. Cooper spent four years in Dallas and already has a rapport with Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott, so he should fit right in with the offense. However, the Cowboys aren’t the only team that could use someone like Cooper.

Amari Cooper Could Reunite With Cowboys As A Free Agent – Other Fits Possible

Other Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have a promising young receiver in Ladd McConkey and invested a second-round pick in Ole Miss wide receiver Tre Harris. These two offer hope for the future, but the team could use a better veteran option. Quentin Johnston is nothing more than a depth option, and the recently re-signed Mike Williams looked like a shell of his former self last year. Amari Cooper could be a perfect supporting piece in this offense, and the free agent might be enough to elevate a talented Chargers team playing in arguably the most competitive division in football.

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are a mess, and they could use a free agent like Amari Cooper to help address their disastrous quarterback room. While Cooper and quarterback Deshaun Watson seemingly weren’t on the same page, the wide receiver never had trouble establishing a rapport with any other Cleveland passer during his time with the team. Head coach Kevin Stefanski clearly knows how to get the best out of the wide receiver, and they need to make life as easy as possible for whichever one of Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders ends up under center.

Buffalo Bills

Amari Cooper did not do much on the field for the Buffalo Bills last year, as he suffered a wrist injury shortly after arriving in upstate New York. However, that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a positive impact on the organization. Just about everyone involved said he was a great mentor and took his reduced role in stride. A team with a young receiving core like Buffalo could use a veteran like Cooper. If he re-discovers his old form, he could be a major asset for Buffalo. However, even if he is nothing more than a depth option, he can still be a positive locker room influence who gives Josh Allen another reliable set of hands.

New Orleans Saints

Regardless of whether or not Derek Carr plays in 2025, the New Orleans Saints will probably start second-round pick Tyler Shough at some point during the upcoming season. The rookie quarterback is one of the more controversial selections in recent memory, but New Orleans needs him to succeed. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed are a fine duo on paper, but Olave’s extensive concussion history makes him a long-term risk. Signing Amari Cooper as a free agent will give this team some much-needed security as they enter another new era under head coach Kellen Moore.
