Reunion? Bills Could Reunite With Old Friend In Head Coaching Search

January 20, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

Brian Daboll first received national acclaim during his time with the Buffalo Bills, and the former New York Giants head coach could reunite with his old squad. The Bills fired Sean McDermott following another early playoff loss, and now the team is searching for a new leader of the organization. While the overall roster is far from the best in the league, any team with Josh Allen under center has a chance to win it all.

While Buffalo is still finalizing their decision, Daboll is one of the most likely hires. According to the posted betting lines, the former Bills offensive coordinator has the second-best odds of landing the job (+350), trailing only Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak (+275)

Brian Daboll A Favorite To Become Bills Next Head Coach

It’s funny to think about now, but there was a time when nobody knew if Josh Allen would become an actual franchise quarterback. While nobody denied his physical gifts, he was wildly inaccurate and mistake-prone in college. Daboll took the raw prospect and turned him into one of the game’s elite passers. After running Buffalo’s offense for four years, Daboll left to lead the New York Giants. At first, this appeared to be a great fit, as the coach turned Daniel Jones into a productive quarterback and even guided the team to a playoff win.

Unfortunately, the wheels soon fell off the wagon. Jones regressed hard, and Daboll eventually benched and released him midway through the 2024 season. He couldn’t win with or without the former first-round pick and finished his Giants career with a 20-40-1 record. Jones, meanwhile, found success with the Indianapolis Colts and was on pace to guide the team to the playoffs before an Achilles injury prematurely ended his season.

The Bills may know what they have in Brian Daboll, and he could probably find some semblance of success in Buffalo. He’s a low-risk, medium-ceiling pick who may be an upgrade on McDermott, but he lacks the allure of the unknown.

Klint Kubiak

Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak could be the next Sean McVay. Unfortunately, he could just as easily be the next Josh McDaniels. The 38-year-old has been coaching since 2010, but first made a name for himself with the New Orleans Saints in 2024. While an absurd amount of injuries destroyed the team late in the year, he had veteran Derek Carr playing the best football of his career early in the season. He proved this wasn’t a fluke in 2025, joining the Seattle Seahawks and coaching the team to the NFC Championship Game. Sam Darnold is playing well, Jaxson Smith-Njigba has established himself as an elite weapon, and the offense is one of the best units in the league.

Knowing how to call plays doesn’t automatically make you a great head coach, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Every team is looking for the next great offensive mastermind, and Kubiak might be it. Brian Daboll is a safer choice, but Klint Kubiak gives this team the upside it needs to finally triumph over the rest of the AFC.
