On a day when the Buffalo Bills released several veteran players to clear cap space, the team has also reportedly zeroed in on a familiar name to fill the backup quarterback spot.
According to Tim Graham of The Athletic, the Bills are discussing a possible reunion with Mitchell Trubisky, who spent the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after suiting up for Buffalo in 2021.
Pittsburgh released Trubisky last month, giving him a head start on finding a new team for 2024 before the free agency tampering period begins on March 11.
In his two seasons with the Steelers, the former No. 2 overall pick appeared in 12 games and made seven starts. Trubisky completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,884 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
During the 2021 season, Trubisky backed up Josh Allen in Buffalo, playing in only six games and completing 6-of-8 passes for 43 yards and one interception.
“It’s hard to handle a situation where you’re coming from basically a career starter to being a backup. That’s a totally different dynamic,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said in February 2022 about Trubisky’s stint with the team. “When somebody else is in front of the microphone a couple lockers down from yours, I thought Mitch Trubisky handled that extremely well, as good as anybody could have handled it.”
Trubisky spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Chicago Bears, who traded up to pick him second overall in 2017. He finished with 10,609 passing yards, 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in a Chicago uniform.
