PFF's pick for Bills' 'key first-year starter' is obvious but true

Pro Football Focus is known for digging deep. They didn’t have to for this one.

The football analytics outlet projected each NFL’s team’s most important starter in 2021 that’s new to their team. For the Bills, the obvious pick is wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

That’s what PPF’s choice was:

Sanders joins his fifth team in Buffalo after successful stints in Pittsburgh, Denver, San Francisco and New Orleans. The early returns from training camp are promising, as The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn said Sanders stood out as Josh Allen’s favorite target with Stefon Diggs missing practice earlier this week. The Bills are deep at wide receiver, with Sanders, Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis topping the depth chart. Sanders’ role as a sure-handed veteran (4.2% drop rate since 2016) and complementary target is important to maintaining that depth.

Sanders, who signed a one-year deal in Buffalo, is an easy selection here for a few reasons. First, he’s realistically the entire team’s only new starter.

The goal of the Bills this offseason was to keep their roster together. In re-signing players like linebacker Matt Milano and offensive lineman Darryl Williams, Buffalo accomplished this.

In addition, Sanders brings a proven talent and experience to Buffalo which few players have. He’s a Super Bowl champion and played in some of the best offenses the league has had to offer in recent memory.

The obvious but right pick by PFF.
