Notable former Bills WR granted release during roster cuts

Not so long ago wide receiver John Brown was the No. 1 wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills on the outside.

Now he’s looking for a new team.

In March, Brown was released by the Bills. He was a solid contributor in Buffalo but injuries slowed him down in 2020.

The 31-year-old was actually only released because he was a cap causality that was set to cost Buffalo $9.5 million on their salary cap in 2021. Had that not been the case, he could still be on the Bills.

Now he could be anywhere as the Las Vegas Raiders, who signed Brown earlier this offseason, cut him on Tuesday.

Per Raiders Wire, the veteran receiver requested the Raiders cut him when NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to 53. The team granted him that.

Brown had long figured to be sticking around in Las Vegas until recently. He saw 25 snaps in the team’s preseason finale, which was not a good sign and perhaps something that upset him.

Considering Brown is a free agent, the Bills could now re-sign him. However, it seems unlikely.

With his previous starting experience, another team could offer him more than the Bills currently in terms of playing time. The Bills ended up keeping seven wide receivers on their 53-man roster after their initial roster cuts.

That’s one packed wide receiver room.

But if for whatever reason a starting job doesn’t happen, the Bills might consider using a veteran practice squad spot on him. He does know the Buffalo offense very well, after all.
