Hairston walked off after trainers examined his right knee

The injury news has been less than ideal thus far in Buffalo Bills training camp, with multiple players dealing with nagging issues here or there. On Tuesday, however, Maxwell Hairston, the Bills’ first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, left with an apparent injury to his right knee.

Taron Johnson spoke to the media after practice about Maxwell Hairston’s injury:

“I mean, I’ve seen guys be down for long periods of time and actually be okay, so I’m hoping it’s something like that.”#BillsMafia @BuffaloPlus https://t.co/k9VxXbxoMr pic.twitter.com/Yv2MeYIXmJ

When talking to WHAM’s Dan Fetes after practice, both Taron Johnson and Dane Jackson were asked about Hairston’s injury. Johnson seemed optimistic, saying that he has seen players stay down for prolonged periods of time before and be fine. Jackson’s assessment was less sunny, as he described the incident that led to Hairston needing assistance as “a freak little trip-up.”

The injury was described by multiple reporters as non-contact, occurring during the individual drills portion of practice. We don’t know anything more than that, but we’ll be on the lookout for more information as it becomes available.

Hairston, who turns 22 years old on August 6, was chosen No. 30 overall by the Bills in the 2025 NFL Draft. While in college at Kentucky, he nabbed six interceptions and returned three of them for touchdowns across 32 NCAA contests. He has been battling with veteran Tre’Davious White, Buffalo’s first-round choice in the 2017 NFL Draft, for the right to start opposite Christian Benford.
