Four Downs: Are there any surprise cut candidates for the Bills?

In this week’s edition of Four Downs I take a bit of a left turn from the normal format and take a closer look at some surprise cut candidates for the Buffalo Bills. All NFL clubs are set to have the 53-man rosters set by 4:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, August 31, and the Bills could certainly have some surprise cut candidates. While I am not saying I expect these players to be cut, I do not believe their roster spots are guaranteed. Check out my list and share your own surprise cut candidates in the comments section.

Matt Breida

When it comes to the running backs, something will have to give this season. Taiwan Jones is a special teams ace, Reggie Gilliam has impressed at fullback, and the team invested day-two picks on Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. While I’m certainly a fan of Breida, he may be more of a luxury as opposed to a necessity. His speed certainly adds some “pop” to Buffalo’s backfield, but I won’t be surprised if he is left off the 53-man roster.

Tommy Doyle

The Bills lack depth at backup offensive tackle, and Tommy Doyle isn’t currently positioned to see the field during the 2021 season. It’s not often that the team will admit they missed on a fifth-round draft pick, but Doyle clearly needs more time to develop. I don’t believe he’s shown enough where another squad would sign him to the 53-man roster, and the Bills could look to sneak him on the practice squad.

Taiwan Jones

The Bills could decide that they value the speed of Breida over the special teams prowess of Jones. Many expect Jones to be a lock, but the team can only keep so many players who only contribute on special teams. Don’t be surprised if Jones isn’t on the final 53-man roster by the end of Tuesday.

Vernon Butler

Many fans might not consider this to be a surprise, but the injury status of Harrison Phillips makes Butler’s chances a bit more positive. The Bills would save $1.75 million if they moved on from Butler, which could be used to sign someone off waivers following cuts.
