On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills released tight end Jacob Hollister to the surprise of many fans and reporters. Hollister had been the number-two tight end behind Dawson Knox all summer and third TE Tommy Sweeney spent 2020 on the sideline and was hurt through a large chunk of the preseason. On Thursday, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Because Hollister was a vested veteran with at least four years of NFL experience, he was not subject to the waiver wire. The Jaguars would have ended up with him anyway, as they are the top team on the waiver list.
“Just a numbers game,” general manager Brandon Beane said on cutting Hollister. “We went heavy on the DL. We wish him the best. Never close the door on bringing him back but my guess is he will sign with another team.”
In addition to Knox and Sweeney, the team has FB/TE hybrid Reggie Gilliam on the roster and Quintin Morris on their practice squad. They signed Kahale Warring to their practice squad this week, as well. Warring was a third-round pick in 2019 NFL Draft and the Bills were reportedly going to take him before he went to the Houston Texans. The Bills took Knox ten picks later.
