Former Bills QB Matt Barkley signs with Titans

August 6, 2021 by Bills Wire Leave a Comment

(Update: 2:07 p.m.): That was quick. Kizer has been released by the Titans.

#Titans are releasing DeShone Kizer, now that team has added Barkley … Kizer was unimpressive at training camp.

As training camps in the NFL roll on, one former and recent Buffalo Bills quarterback in Matt Barkley has found a new home.

Via his social media account on Twitter, Barkley announced he signed with the Tennessee Titans:

The next episode.. I’ve signed with the @Titans!

According to Titans Wire, Barkley 30, will join a competition for the backup job under center behind Ryan Tannehill. Currently that includes Logan Woodside and DeShone Kizer.

Kizer does have an edge on Barkley in terms of games started in the NFL, 15 to seven, however, he went winless in his only season as QB1 with the Cleveland Browns in 2017 (0-15). Barkley is 2-5 overall, meanwhile, Woodside has zero career starts.

In Buffalo, Barkley was a beloved No. 2 behind Josh Allen. He did have one strong performance where he started and beat the New York Jets in 2018 but the Bills turned things back over to Allen which was probably for the best.

After 2021, Barkley was a free agent but the Bills did not re-sign him. Buffalo opted for Mitchell Trubisky behind Allen due to their similar playing style.

The Bills did do right by Barkley in that instance, though. General manager Brandon Beane said during a press conference earlier this offseason that he reached out to Barkley prior to the team announcing the Trubisky signing because he wanted to explain the reasoning.

If the cards do fall the right way, there is a chance that the Bills could see Barkley next season. Pending him winning his upcoming training camp battle, Buffalo does visit Tennessee for Monday Night Football in Week 6.
