The Bills begin their quest for a Super Bowl on Sunday hosting the Steelers. Here’s how you can watch/listen/follow along.
After months of waiting in anticipation, the 2021 NFL season finally kicks off for the reigning AFC East champion Buffalo Bills on Sunday afternoon, when the Bills welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to Highmark Stadium for a season-opening 1 p.m. EDT clash.
With 20 of their 22 starters returning from a 2020 campaign that saw Buffalo go 13-3 in the regular season, claim the AFC East title and advance into the AFC Championship, All-Pro quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills are a serious threat to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1993 season.
Allen and the Bills’ prolific offense shattered all kinds of team records last year, including scoring 501 points—an average of 31.3 points per game in the regular season, tops in the AFC and second most in the NFL.
Allen broke franchise records for passing yards (4,544), passing touchdowns (37), total touchdowns (45), completion percentage (69.2), quarterback rating (107.2), and ESPN’s QBR statistic (81.7) while guiding Buffalo’s high flying offense.
All-Pro wideouts Stefon Diggs and Cole Beasley and emerging standout Gabriel Davis will be joined by talented veteran Emmanuel Sanders to give Allen arguably the best quartet of wide receivers in the league.
Led by rookie first-round selection Greg Rousseau, bulked up second-year man A.J. Epenesa, the underrated Jerry Hughes and the emergence of Ed Oliver up the middle, the Bills’ pass rush should be much improved this year. Defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Leslie Frazier’s squad will get its first test of the year when Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers travel to Western New York for Week 1.
Last year, the Steelers raced out to an 11-0 start before limping to a 1-4 finish and were eliminated by the Cleveland Browns, 48-37 on Wild Card weekend.
Future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returns for his 18th season with the Black and Gold, and is playing behind an offensive line that lost three former Pro Bowl players this offseason: center Maurkice Pouncey, guard David DeCastro and tackle Al Villanueva.
Sunday’s matchup will be the 28th all-time between the Bills and the Steelers, and the first time these two have met in the season opener since 1978. Pittsburgh holds a 16-11 edge in the series.
Buffalo was victorious the last two times these teams met, including a 26-15 triumph on Dec. 13, 2020 at then Bills Stadium. Taron Johnson returned a Roethlisberger interception 51 yards for a touchdown right before halftime, Stefon Diggs hauled in ten passes for 130 yards with one touchdown, and Josh Allen completed 24 of 43 passes for 238 yards with two TDs and one interception in the win.
The Bills also prevailed 17-10 at Heinz Field on Dec. 15, 2019 to snap a six-game losing streak vs. Pittsburgh. Tyler Kroft hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Allen, and the Bills picked off Devlin “Duck” Hodges four times as Buffalo wrapped up a playoff berth with the victory.
The Bills are 6.5-point favorites and will be wearing their white jerseys with white pants and white helmet. Here are all the ways to catch Sunday’s game from home:
