Buffalo Bills Releasing Tight End In Surprising Move

August 31, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

A general view of the Buffalo Bills stadium.

The Buffalo Bills made a surprising move ahead of Tuesday’s final cut deadline by releasing a well-respected, veteran tight end.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Bills are releasing 27-year-old Jacob Hollister. The veteran tight end signed a one-year deal with Buffalo earlier this spring to re-unite with his former quarterback at Wyoming, Josh Allen.

Hollister spent the last two seasons with the Seahawks, where he played in 27 games and made eight starts. He hauled in 66 catches for 558 yards and six scores during that span, proving to be a reliable target for Russell Wilson in Seattle.

Prior to his stint with the Seahawks, Hollister began his career in New England. He won the Super Bow with the Patriots during the 2018 season.

However, Hollister couldn’t define his role with the Bills this summer and now he’ll hit the open market with less than two weeks to go before the start of the regular season.

A surprise: The #Bills are releasing TE Jacob Hollister, per source.

He had 66 catches and six TDs over the past two seasons in Seattle. With so many teams looking for help at the position, Hollister should have options.

Hollister projected to be the Bills second tight end behind Dawson Knox, but head coach Sean McDermott must have other ideas in mind for the position. 2019 seventh-round pick Tommy Sweeney remains the next intriguing option, but his health is still in question after he missed most of the 2020 season. Past that, the Bills don’t seem to have many tight ends to factor into the mix.

Meanwhile, Hollister should have his fair share of suitors before the regular season gets underway. After two productive years in Seattle, the 27-year-old still has plenty to give to any team in need of a tight end.

Hollister is just one of many surprising cuts that will be made by organizations around the league on Tuesday. All 32 clubs must finalize their 53-man rosters by 4 p.m. ET this afternoon.
