Buffalo Bills Beef Up Depth at OL With Nick Broeker

September 23, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After the first three weeks of the 2025 NFL season, the 3-0 Buffalo Bills are working to avoid depth issues along their offensive line. This afternoon, the Buffalo Bills announced that they have signed offensive lineman Nick Broeker, who primarily plays guard. Broeker returns to the Bills after being drafted by Buffalo during the 7th round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Buffalo Bills Beef Up Depth at OL With Nick Broeker

Bills GM Brandon Beane often adds free agents to the practice roster when anticipating depth issues. Nick Broeker fits the need for a temporary, quality backup. In his three-year NFL career, Broeker has spent time with the Bills, Texans, and Cowboys.
An important intangible quality of Broeker is his ability to play guard or tackle along the offensive line.  Before being drafted by Buffalo in 2023, Broeker played in 48 games from 2019 until 2022 at Ole Miss.  While playing for the Rebels, Broker started 36 games, with 20 at left tackle and 13 at left guard.

Planning Ahead

The Bills currently have only three offensive guards on their active roster. Before signing Broeker, Kendrick Green was the only guard on the practice squad. Experienced offensive linemen are hard to find during the season, so in classic Brandon Beane form, Broeker is being brought in as insurance. This season, the Bills’ offensive line has excelled at both run blocking and pass protection.
Broeker fits the Bills’ offensive line identity, which is known for its excellent pass protection. Protecting quarterback Josh Allen is a priority, especially after his nose injury in Week 2 against the Jets. If a Bills lineman is injured this season, Broeker can step in and perform well for as long as needed.
The addition of Broeker could foreshadow some injury issues along the offensive line in Week 4.  Recently, the Buffalo Bills added kicker Matt Prater to their practice roster, and just a few days later, they announced that Tyler Bass would be out with a hip injury.  This situation could be similar, but it likely will not become clear until Buffalo starts their preparation to face the New Orleans Saints.
