The Bills signed Tyler Matakevich mostly for one reason, and it’s not to play his listed position on the team’s roster. Matakevich, previously with the Steelers, earned a reputation as one of the NFL’s best special teams players.
In recent years, Buffalo’s special teams has been average-at-best. It appears head coach Sean McDermott isn’t settling for that anymore, though. We’ve got kicking and punting battles, and Matakevich’s addition this offseason. That’s a sign toward an emphasis on that third unit of the game.
Breaking down exactly how valuable Matakevich is should be handled by a professional, though. Good news for Bills fans, NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger recently took a swing at doing just that.
