After a shocking trade, the Jacksonville Jaguars will select wide receiver Travis Hunter in this year’s NFL Draft. According to reports, it’s shocking that the team made this move considering they were sitting at the No. 5 pick and now they hold the decision whether to play Hunter wide receiver or at cornerback. However, after releasing Evan Engram and trading Christian Kirk, it makes sense for the Jaguars to have Hunter in their pass-catching unit. This spells bad news for wide receiver Gabe Davis, who had one of the worst 2024 campaigns in the league, and while they can’t release him since it would affect their cap, they could put him on the trade block.
Originally selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former UCF product began his career with the Buffalo Bills, hoping to carve out a full-time role as a reliable playmaker, but slowly, his production was spiraling down during the 2023 season. After posting 45 receptions for 746 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his last season with the Bills, it wasn’t enough for the team to keep him around as he was more of a liability. The Jaguars now have Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr. and Dyami Brown, who will likely form a triple-threat for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Davis might not attract many suitors, but these 5 desperate teams may call up the Jaguars about his availability.
Breaking: Jaguars Travis Hunter Draft Selection Could Signal NFL Blockbuster Trade
Next Possible Teams
New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints need another wide receiver for whoever will become the next signal-caller. After losing Derek Carr to a potential season-ending injury, Rashid Shaheed and veteran Brandin Cooks can’t do it alone. Chris Olave may be on the trade block even after the NFL Draft this year, as he may desire to head to a championship roster. Davis won’t single-handedly save this offense, but it gives the team a new weapon to work with.
Carolina Panthers
Meanwhile, the veteran wideout Adam Thielen could cause a lot of trade buzz during the draft despite signing a new one-year deal. Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker are two rising talents, but they’re not proven yet to last a full season with consistency. Davis isn’t anything spectacular, but the Panthers could offer a day-three pick for the wide receiver to add some experience in this young offense.
Dallas Cowboys
No matter who the Dallas Cowboys select during the NFL Draft, they need a more experienced pass catcher. They must understand that Dak Prescott can’t excel in the postseason even with Jalen Tolbert at the No. 3 receiver spot. CeeDee Lamb is one of the best pass catchers in the league, so he needs someone like Davis to be a consistent contributor on the field. He won’t explode, but at least the Cowboys have some type of life in their receiving corps.
Buffalo Bills
The same could be said about the Buffalo Bills ever since they’ve been reluctant to bring back Amari Cooper. After signing Josh Allen signed his explosive contract, it’s safe to bring back a familiar face to the corps along to pair with Khalil Shakir again. They may trade for another wideout either way, but that should be Davis if worst comes to worst.
