The Buffalo Bills have signed a pair of defensive tackles, the team announced on Sunday.

Smart was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tulane. He played 31 games over three years for the team, including starting four games his rookie season. He’s collected 21 total tackles in his three-year career, often as a backup to All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald. He was released back in May.

This will be Zimmer’s second stint in the Bills organization. He was originally signed by the club as an undrafted free agent out of Ferris State in 2016, then released during the preseason that year. Since then, Zimmer has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons, and Cleveland Browns, as well as the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He’s appeared in three NFL regular season games, one with the Falcons in 2018 and two with the Browns last season, where he recorded five total tackles.

The Bills had a total of four defensive tackles tryout for them, according to the NFL’s transaction wire. Oftentimes, teams simply want to get a look and information on a player now in case they need to act quickly at the position at some point during the season. However, in this case, they were clearly looking to add to and make changes at the spot.

Smart and Zimmer join Ed Oliver, Quinton Jefferson, Harrison Phillips, Vernon Butler, and Vincent Taylor on the roster at defensive tackle.
