Bills release five players ahead of roster cut deadline

August 25, 2021 by Bills Wire Leave a Comment

The Buffalo Bills had to release five players by 4 p.m. on Tuesday and did so in the early afternoon hours.

The team announced those five players are:

  • LB Tyrell Adams
  • OL Tyler Gauthier
  • TE Bug Howard
  • WR Lance Lenoir
  • S Tariq Thompson

Gauthier, Howard and Thompson come as little surprise based on numbers. Adams and Lenoir had some positive notes taken on them via reports from training camp, but numbers also did not help their cases.

Adams was steady, but linebackers Tyler Matakevich and Andre Smith both shined during Buffalo’s first two preseason games this summer. Additionally, the duo are also two of the Bills’ top special teams contributors.

Lenoir had a few highlight-reel plays at wideout during Bills camp. However, Buffalo has once of the deepest wide receiver rooms in the NFL, so he had a very uphill battle to make the team’s final roster.

In releasing those players early and ahead of final roster cuts next week, the Bills could possibly be giving Adams and Lenoir an early opportunity to sign with another team this week.

If they don’t, there is a chance of them signing with Buffalo’s practice squad after final cuts next week.

Also on Tuesday, the Bills reportedly had five players placed on a COVID-19 designation.

Those five now have to quarantine for five days and there was some speculation that while they were doing so, the Bills would not have to release anyone to get down to the league-mandated total by the deadline… a.k.a. those five players would’ve been viewed as “temporary cuts.”

Evidently the Bills still decided to release these five players.
