With just one day before the NFL’s final 53-man roster deadline, teams from around the league are getting in some last minute trades.
According to reports from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport on Monday morning, the Buffalo Bills are sending third-year defensive end Darryl Johnson to the Carolina Panthers.

Johnson was selected by the Bills with a seventh-round pick in the 2019 draft. Through his two seasons in Buffalo, the backup DE has logged two sacks, 29 tackles and five tackles for loss in 31 contests.
Heading to Carolina, this trade will be somewhat of a return home for Johnson, who suited up for his collegiate games at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.
While we don’t know what the Panthers gave up in this trade, it seems like somewhat of a strange move on their part.
As of right now, the Carolina roster is packed with DE options. Returning starter Brian Burns and former Los Angeles Rams pickup Morgan Fox are slated as the starters heading into the 2021 season. Returner Marquis Haynes (4.0 sacks in 2020) and former fourth-round pick Christian Miller are both positioned ahead of Johnson, who currently sits fourth on the LDE depth chart.
For the Bills on the other hand, this deal made perfect sense. Coming into today, the team had eight defensive end options on their roster.
