Bills, Packers Linked to Surprising Potential Reunion – Ravens, Chargers Could Intervene

The Green Bay Packers could sign cornerback Rasul Douglas in a potential reunion move since they’ll likely have a few holes in their secondary. According to some reports, it makes sense considering the history Douglas and the Packers have especially if they’ll probably cut Jaire Alexander after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Green Bay will still need to clear up some cap space so they have the financial liberty to make several moves to increase the cornerback department. This would only happen by releasing Alexander and letting Eric Stokes hit the market so they may make room for Douglas’ return.

Originally selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former West Virginia product spent the first few seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before becoming a journeyman for some of his career. Douglas got some life in 2021, helping the Packers appear in multiple postseasons, recording 174 total tackles and 10 interceptions. With early struggles, Green Bay made a hard move in trading him to Buffalo in 2023 but since Pro Football Focus still lists him as a top-15 cornerback, he could be a worthy investment for the Packers secondary. Douglas would be a cheaper option since he is aging, especially considering the financial situation of the Packers.

However, since he’s a top free-agent cornerback, he should garner interest from a few teams that could include the Ravens, Chargers in this situation.

Looking for Potential Replacements

The Baltimore Ravens probably had one of the worst ends to their 2024 campaign with a close divisional loss. However, much of the blame could be on clock management but the secondary was not able to find a way to stop Josh Allen for most of that contest which is why cornerbacks like Brandon Stephens probably won’t return. However, a source believes Marlon Humphrey will not come back next season as well since he will be a $25.4 million cap hit to the team’s salary. This would leave a glaring hole for the Ravens’ secondary which was already struggling since losing key defenders last offseason such as Geno Stone.

Rookie Nate Wiggins still adjusting to the league so it’s not wise for the Ravens to depend on him as the full-time starter. This means they will focus on the free-agent market to find some veteran insurance policies to help bolster the team’s secondary. Douglas is way past his prime and doesn’t have the capabilities to make every play. However, he could be an efficient help for a secondary unit that is getting younger so they have that mentorship once the Ravens return to the postseason and Douglas has plenty of experience in the playoffs.

Helping Jim Harbaugh’s Defense

It’s difficult to digest what the outlook of the Los Angeles Chargers defense will be next season being that they have several impending free agents. Tarheeb Still is arguably the best developmental cornerback in this unit but the same could be said for Kristian Fulton even though he’s a little more older. However, while Still continues to develop, Fulton should return to the Chargers if another team doesn’t pick him up this free agency. The Chargers should do everything to bring back Fulton considering he had one of the best seasons in a surprising steal move from last year’s free agency signing.

That should solidify one lockdown corner for whichever side of the end works for the team. However, the team will still need depth since it currently looks bleak. Since the Bills have not discussed bringing back Douglas, he could join forces in Los Angeles and play alongside Fulton to create a new potentially ferocious duo.
