Bills' Case Keenum downplays potential start vs. former team for good reason

November 11, 2022 by Bills Wire

The jury is still out on Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen… as expected.

Few would have anticipated Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott to announce much of anything regarding Allen’s elbow injury this week. That’s exactly how it went on Wednesday.

McDermott called Allen’s status “day-to-day.”

However, what we do know, is that Allen did not participate in practice with his teammates. Via the Bills’ injury report on Wednesday, Allen was not out there.

That starts to shed some more light on Case Keenum.

Allen’s No. 2 has not made a start in Buffalo and his first might be in Week 10 against his former team, the Minnesota Vikings (7-1).

But… that aspect of it is not a big deal for Keenum, and it’s pretty believable as to why.

Keenum has played against ex teams before… because he’s played for so many. In total, Keenum has played for seven clubs, including the Vikes and Bills.

“I’ve played a lot of my former teams before. That’s what happens when you have a lot of former teams,” Keenum said in the Bills locker room on Wednesday. “[Practice] is (this week) is going the same, just got a few more reps today.”

If Keenum is to start, Buffalo’s offense will undoubtedly look different.

Regardless of who, that’s what a different guy playing will do. However, last season, the Bills (6-2) had Mitchell Trubisky as their backup QB because his playing style was more similar to Allen’s.

The same can’t be said for Keenum. He’s a bit more of a pocket passer. Those changes made to the offense and how Keenum manages things are up to the QB and Buffalo’s coaching staff.

At the top of those decisions is McDermott and he said there’s confidence in Keenum if Allen can’t go.

“I just think there’s things that Josh does well, and there’s things that Case does well, and some of that is overlap,” McDermott said via video conference. “You have your system, and without getting too far down that road and into potential strategy areas, we believe in Case Keenum. He’s here for a reason.”

Allen’s status is still going to be monitored throughout the week and keep Buffalo on the edge of their seat, regardless of McDermott’s confidence level… Understandably so with a potential MVP.
